Marathon Training Log


     After exploring about a dozen Marathon training schedules, I realized that you can pretty much train however you want as long as you stick to your training. Most of them lean toward 25-30 miles per week. The schedule below will be updated a couple of weeks in advance and will work around life's many activities. According to the schedule, there is no "rest" days. I have substituted cycling classes at the Ridge instead. It is a cardio workout that doesn't tear up my joints like running does. The main goal of this website is to maintain focus on a training schedule and to record my performance. This schedule will be in addition to my upper body workout program at the Ridge on MWF mornings.
     My first marathon was planned for December 4th in Las Vegas; however, I've decided to do a "practice" marathon on September 25th in Bozeman at the Lewis and Clark Marathon. The goal of the Lewis and Clark Marathon will be to finish! The goal of the Las Vegas Marathon will be to improve my time and to have some fun on the STRIP!

8/27/2005 Saturday 17 miles Reese Creek Run - awesome run! Reese Creek provided a picturesque view of the Belgrade valley. I saw a 1940s style baby bulldozer like the one we use at the cabin. The run felt like it was downhill both ways - can't beat that! The East Gallatin is a beautiful area also. See GPS Map.
8/26/2005 Friday(morning) 3 miles Easy jog - this week has been a little light for my "non long" runs. Next week I hope to pick it up a bit.
8/25/2005 Thursday GYM will be Closed - Ride to work instead. JK Squared Rides to Work - See My GPS Map. See Jason's GPS Map. On Cottonwood Street you will notice an extra pause on my map. That's where I tried to show Jason how to do a table top on your bicycle. I got the sideways part correct.
8/24/2005 Wednesday BSWD - Sourdough Trail Long Run Did medium run because of stuffy nose - Advertised as 3.5 miles, but actually it was more.See GPS Map. Leann was only a minute behind me - Yikes!
8/23/2005 Tuesday Cycling The Ridge 5:30PM 9.3 miles - New instructor introduced me to switchbacks. Good workout.
8/22/2005 Monday Jog for an hour to regain feet. Belgrade Cake Walk / Glider Lane Figure Eight, feet were fine; glutes were a bit sore.
8/21/2005 Sunday(evening) 15 miles Sunburner 14 miler See GPS Map. I'm sure there is a Chinese proverb that says something about running west at 5PM in August. Although I've never studied much Chinese, I'm sure it would say something like, "Man who runs into sun is stupid." Anyway, the first 8 miles weren't too bad, but the heat started getting to me, so I jumped at the chance for some shade and a water fountain at Lindley Park. Only ran about 14 miles, the rest was walking.
Week 5 - Lewis and Clark ... Week 16 - Las Vegas
8/20/2005 Saturday Ice Caves Hike at Crystal Lake above Lewistown. Did Grand View Hike instead. GPS wouldn't work, but according to the signs that you follow, we either went 6 or 8 miles. Views were AWESOME!
8/19/2005 Friday(morning) 3 miles Woke up late for spinning so I did the escalator-stair-stepper instead. That machine should be illegal. I decided that the reason it is so hard is because even when you are going slow, you are still climbing; there is no coasting whatsoever.
8/18/2005 Thursday Cycling Traded tomorrows run for today to try out new shoes. Half hour run while getting oil changed!

8/13/2005 Saturday 9 miles 13 miles - Ran first half of Lewis and Clark Marathon. GPS batteries died at mile 4. Took 2 hours 35 minutes. The first 3.5 uphill miles are just fine. The next 6.5 miles down hill are a rush. The 2 miles up Kelly Canyon are brutal!
